Westland Mineral Sands (WMS) is excited to announce the launch of our second biennial education scholarship, continuing our commitment to supporting the next generation of professionals in the critical minerals industry.

Following the success of our 2023 scholarship awarded to Kaira Lourie for her Bachelor of Science in Geology, we are once again offering a $32,500 scholarship to a passionate and driven student pursuing a relevant degree.

WMS Scholarship Details:

  • Amount: $32,500
    • $5,000.00 in year one
    • $7,500.00 in year two and
    • $10,000.00 in year three and
    • $10,000.00 in year four (if required).
  • Eligibility: Open to students pursuing degrees related to the critical minerals industry (Surveying, Civil Engineering, Geology, Environmental management, Sustainability, etc.)
  • Applications Open: August 4th
  • Applications Close: September 1st

Just like Kaira who gained valuable experience in 2024, the scholarship recipient will have the opportunity to intern with WMS, gaining practical insights into the mining industry. These experiences are designed to equip young professionals with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the industry and make a meaningful impact in their communities.

“This scholarship has really helped ease the financial burden and allowed me to get hands-on experience in the mining industry. I’ve been busy working at the Nine Mile pilot plant with lab sampling and office work, gaining valuable insights into the mining process,” says Kaira.

Originally from a dairy farm in Hokitika, Kaira is excited to return to the West Coast with new skills that will benefit her community.

WMS Managing Director Ray Mudgway says the scholarship represents our long-term commitment to the West Coast and to developing a skilled, sustainable workforce for the critical minerals sector.

“By investing in education, we’re helping to build the future of both the industry and the region. If you’re a student with a passion for the mining sector and are ready to take the next step in your career, apply for this fantastic opportunity to receive financial support and real-world experience,” says Mudgway.
