West Coast Bulk Logistics (WCBL), a subsidiary of Westland Mineral Sands, has taken a significant step toward building a fully integrated supply chain by bringing its short-haul trucking operation in-house.
On 1 September, WCBL trucks and drivers for the first time transported heavy mineral concentrate from Nine Mile to Buller Port — a 16km journey that forms a vital link in the company’s logistics chain.
Until now, this work had been managed by Hiltons Haulage, who WCBL acknowledge for their professionalism and contribution to establishing operations.
“With our business growing, the time is right to take greater control of our supply chain,” said WCBL General Manager Mike Stewart.
“Owning our trucks means we can deliver more efficiency, resilience, and value for our shareholders and the region.”
Two new 16 litre V8 Scania R620 truck and trailer units have joined the WMS fleet. Each can transport up to 38 tonnes of concentrate per load, completing seven round trips per day. The move enables the company to meet production targets within its 15-trip consent limit, while reducing costs and strengthening operational reliability.

Safety has been a focus from the outset. The truck bins have been coated with Teflon, reducing the tipping height needed to discharge material. This innovation lowers the risk of tip-overs and enhances overall safety.
