Westland Mineral Sands (WMS) is proud to announce Ben Ritchie as the recipient of its 2025 WMS Tertiary Scholarship.
Ben, a Buller High School prefect, keen rugby player, and active community member, will study Geology at the University of Canterbury next year.
Now in its second biennial round, the WMS Scholarship reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of professionals in the critical minerals industry. The $32,500 scholarship provides both financial support and the opportunity for a hands-on internship with WMS, giving recipients valuable exposure to the industry.
WMS Managing Director Ray Mudgway says the scholarship reinforces the company’s long-term vision for the region and its people.
“By investing in education, we’re helping to build the future of both the industry and the West Coast. If you’re a student with a passion for the mining sector and are ready to take the next step in your career, this scholarship provides not just financial assistance but also real-world experience.”
Ben impressed the selection panel with his academic strength, leadership qualities, and clear commitment to the West Coast. His enthusiasm for geology and sustainable resource management also stood out.
“WMS is the perfect place to pursue a career in mining and geology, and I’m particularly drawn to their focus on sustainability – protecting and restoring the environment after mining is something I’m really passionate about,” says Ben.
Ben will join previous scholarship recipient Kaira Lourie from Hokitika, who is currently studying Geology at the University of Canterbury, and DWC scholarship recipient Charlotte Sweney as part of the WMS internship programme. Together, they will gain hands-on experience during semester breaks, learning the ropes of the minerals industry on the West Coast.
Mudgway says the scholarship is about more than financial support – it’s an investment in people and in the future of the region.
“This scholarship recognises not only academic achievement, but also dedication, perseverance, and a genuine desire to contribute to the West Coast’s future. We’re thrilled to support Ben’s journey and look forward to seeing him grow into a future leader in the critical minerals industry,” says Mudgway. The WMS scholarship was awarded in partnership with Development West Coast, which also presented tertiary scholarships to four outstanding young West Coasters.
