Westland Mineral Sands (WMS) is proud to announce the first recipient of the WMS Community Fund: Kawatiri Health, who received support towards the installation of a backup generator to strengthen the resilience of essential healthcare services in Westport.

The WMS Community Fund provides contestable grants to support projects that help the West Coast thrive by improving community well-being, protecting the environment, and building a more connected and sustainable future.

The installation of the generator has been made possible through the generous support of several key contributors, including WMS, whose valuable contribution helps ensure the project’s long-term success. This support means Kawatiri Health can continue to deliver vital medical and dental services during power outages, Civil Defence events, and other emergency situations.

“Giving back to the community that supports us is a core part of who we are. These grants are about enabling local ideas that deliver real benefits – socially, environmentally, and economically. Supporting Kawatiri Health is a great example of that in action,” says WMS Managing Director Ray Mudgway.

Kawatiri Health General Manager, Pauline Ansley, says the installation of the new generator marks a big step forward in strengthening the resilience of the practice and the wider community.

“Once fully connected, it will ensure we can continue delivering essential healthcare services during outages or emergencies. We’re deeply appreciative of Westland Mineral Sands’ support in helping us prepare for future challenges,” says Ansley.

The WMS Community Fund is open for applications twice per year. Local groups are encouraged to apply for projects that align with WMS’s focus on strengthening community resilience, caring for the environment, using natural resources responsibly, celebrating local culture and connection, and growing local skills and opportunities.
