WMS Planting Programme to Enhance Local Biodiversity

At Westland Mineral Sands (WMS), we’re committed to fostering resilient ecosystems for the future. Our ongoing initiatives, including an indigenous planting program at Cape Foulwind, are key to enhancing the local environment.

“We’ve launched a planting program to create a plant buffer between our site and neighbouring habitats. This supports our goal of building ecological corridors that reduce environmental impact while benefiting local flora and fauna,” says WMS Managing Director Ray Mudgway.

“We’ve carefully selected species like Manuka, Kohuhu, Coprosma, Oioi, and Mahoe to thrive in the region’s climate and soil. These native plants will complement existing vegetation and support local wildlife.

“Our consultants have assessed the landscape to recommend plants suited to the local ecosystem, ensuring these habitats foster both native flora and fauna for years to come.

This program aligns with WMS’s broader sustainability strategy, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land.

“We’re committed to progressive land rehabilitation that minimises disturbance and restores landscape – often with environmental enhancements. This helps protect endangered species and maintain healthy ecosystems while balancing operational excellence.

“We believe in integrating environmental care into every aspect of our operations, including on-site trials to optimise land use post-mining. This ensures land remains productive for agriculture and other uses, while protecting the environment,” says Mudgway.

Through its planting program, WMS continues to demonstrate responsible practices and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the local ecosystem.
