Our logistics company is unlocking stranded assets across regional New Zealand.
Creating resilient supply chains
Shipping networks are being reintroduced around Aotearoa New Zealand, unlocking valuable resource and supporting isolated coastal communities. As well as securing supply for our critical minerals to the world, we are providing growth opportunities for other coastal communities to get their product out to market and supplying much needed aggregate for our infrastructure projects.
Our partnerships with iwi and stakeholders have made our shipping networks viable. We’ve worked closely with local councils and communities on every part of our investment into coastal shipping. This included the upgrading of ratepayer assets such as local ports and shipping infrastructure, and ensuring our vessel choice has wider benefits for the local businesses and community.
By supporting coastal community resilience, we are also supporting the decarbonisation of Aotearoa New Zealand’s transport fleet. Growth of our shipping routes will reduce the need for trucks on roads for our operation and for others, such as the movement of dairy products, aggregates, timber and other industrial materials.
In 2022, Westland Mineral Sands made a significant promise for the first time in Aotearoa New Zealand’s history. We promised to make New Zealand a leading global supplier of critical minerals to the world.
In 2023, we have moved into production – making true on that promise.
Creating a resilient West Coast
Our company, West Coast Bulk Logistics, through its lease of ports at Greymouth and Westport, is investing in upgrades to the existing infrastructure to ensure these publicly-owned assets can not only meet the needs of the mineral sands operation but also better serve the community in an emergency scenario.
Together with our motorised barge, these ports will play a vital role in moving goods in and out of the West Coast region if road access becomes difficult. The coastal shipping network we are developing will also support faster and more efficient recovery efforts, moving rock and aggregate to where it is needed most in New Zealand.
Resilience is about more than just withstanding a disaster, for our local businesses it means having options for secure market access. Our multi-purpose vessel and coastal shipping network will offer a low-carbon solution for other industries and businesses to get their products to the domestic market in a more cost-effective way than moving goods by road.
Manahau – Our motorised barge
Extensive refit works have brought the vessel up to RINA class and Niue flag status, supported by Maritime New Zealand. Refit works included overhauled engines, azimuth drive shafts and bow thrusters, as well as brand new electronics, navigation equipment, accommodation, electrical wiring, and steel plates. Manahau has had a full repaint, inside and out.
The vessel has a capacity of 7000t and is 98m long and is smaller than previous vessels which operated successfully on the Buller and Grey rivers over many decades.
Manahau’s arrival will complete a long held and ambitious plan to see shipping and port operations resume on the West Coast.
